Insurance & Coverage

Last updated May 2026

This page explains, in plain language, how insurance and coverage work on DriverCar. It is a summary — the rental agreement you e-sign and the applicable policy documents are the binding terms. DriverCar is a marketplace, not an insurance company, and does not itself provide insurance or guarantee that any particular loss will be covered.

Provider-verified coverage

Every vehicle must have its proof of insurance verified by DriverCar before it can be listed. Listings show an insurance status and a per-vehicle damage deductible so you understand what you're responsible for before you book. A listing whose insurance lapses or expires is removed from search until it's re-verified.

What coverage depends on

Whether and how a loss is covered depends on several things, including:

  • the terms of the rental agreement and the applicable insurance policy;
  • your rideshare/delivery app status at the time of the incident (app off, available, en route to a pickup, or on-trip) — different periods can be treated very differently;
  • whether you were an authorized driver using the vehicle within the allowed uses and mileage; and
  • the specific facts of the claim.

Don't assume coverage you haven't confirmed in writing. If you're unsure, ask before you drive.

Deposit & deductible

Each rental has a refundable deposit and a damage deductible, both shown on the listing and in your agreement. For documented damage, your deposit may be applied toward your deductible; amounts beyond the deposit that you're responsible for may be charged to your payment method. Tolls, citations, and cleaning are your responsibility and are handled the same way.

After an accident

  • Make sure everyone is safe and call emergency services if anyone is hurt.
  • Report it immediately in the app — we record the time, location, and app status, and notify the provider and insurer.
  • Document everything with photos, and exchange information with anyone involved.
  • Don't admit fault at the scene; let the insurer assess the claim.

Your responsibility

You're responsible for operating the vehicle safely and lawfully, for damage up to the deductible, and for any losses arising from prohibited use (see the Terms of Service). Maintain any personal coverage you're required to carry. Coverage is never a substitute for safe driving.
